# Performance and failure share the same root

Out on *Godiva* \- my 1977 Hallberg-Rassy, undergoing restoration - single-handed from Hartlepool to Scarborough, the conditions came together beautifully. Clean but strong wind, bright water, the boat heeling into her stride. One of those exhilarating days on the northeast coast that reminds you exactly why you fell for sailing in the first place.

And then the jib clew blew out.

In an instant the headsail went from driving us forward to flogging uselessly in the breeze. Alone on the boat, that’s the moment the day pivots: no one to hand it off to, no second pair of hands. You either panic, or you work the problem. I furled what I could, rebalanced under the remaining sail, and adjusted the plan to get her home safely.

I made the decision to divert into Whitby.

The reason this stuck with me: the win and the setback happened on the same day, in the same conditions. The wind that made it brilliant was the wind that found the weakest point in my rig. That’s not bad luck - that’s how it always works.

You don’t get to keep the exhilaration and refuse the risk. You learn to sail with both, and single-handed, you learn to be your own crew.

I did the last leg to Scarborough by bus, met the family to see CMAT at the open air theatre, then fish & chips in Whitby and out tomorrow back up to Hartlepool. Awesome weekend.
